UNIDO announces programme for stone industry in Rajasthan

Jaipur, Dec 15 (IANS) The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) Thursday proposed an ambitious project for technology modernisation programme for Rajasthan’s stone industry and strengthening of the stone testing centre at the state capital.

The project, to be executed by UNIDO’s International Centre for Advancement of Manufacturing Technology (ICAMT), will focus on new technologies and innovations to improve the mining productivity and processing by judicious harnessing of reserves and reducing waste.

“The programme intervention will address a host of issues pertaining to stone,” ICAMT’s national programme coordinator M.S. Dhakkad told the “Global Stone Technology Forum - 2011″ seminar here.

These include obsolete technology, environment conservation, waste utilization, value addition, promoting appropriate stones for applications, publications, research and Development, and capacity building of the Centre for Development of Stone (CDOS).

Earlier, ICAMT had implemented a successful national programme for development of stone industry in India with major focus on Rajasthan. A stone test house, a first of its kind for India, was also set up at the premises of CDOS at Jaipur.

The seminar was jointly organised by CDOS and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) with support from the Rajasthan State Industrial Development and Investment Corporation.
