UAE’s Burj Khalifa bags best construction project award
March 24th, 2011 - 1:18 am ICT by IANSDubai, March 23 (IANS/WAM) The world’s tallest building, Burj Khalifa in the UAE, has been awarded the best construction project of the year in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, it was announced Wednesday.
MEED, the Middle East’s leading business intelligence provider, held a gala awards ceremony to recognise the top projects across eight categories at the first MEED Quality Awards for Projects, an independently-judged excellence recognition competition for projects completed in the GCC.
The ceremony, held March 22 at the Ritz-Carlton in Dubai, was attended by officials and representatives from leading private sector enterprises in the region.
The gas desulphurisation refinery in Bahrain topped the list for the Oil and Gas’ category while Qatar’s Mesaieed-A IPP won the Power’ category.
Al Ghubrah-5 in Oman and the GPIC carbon dioxide recovery plant in Bahrain emerged winners in the Water Reuse’ and Sustainable Project’ categories respectively.
Kuwait National Library was selected for the Social Project of the Year award.
Projects from the UAE bagged five awards. Burj Khalifa was the undisputed winner in the Building Project of the Year category.
Edmund O’Sullivan, chairman of MEED Quality Awards for Projects, said: “The 32 projects that were nominated for the GCC Awards have gone through a rigorous selection process.”
