Ranchi, April 17 (IANS) Two people died of “shock” after they were served eviction notices during the ongoing demolition drive in Jharkhand, their family members said Sunday.

Kisun Singh, 65, a resident of Mausibari colony in Ranchi died Sunday, five days after the Heavy Engineering Corporation (HEC) issued him a notice to vacate his house.

“My father stopped eating after the notice was served to him. He was in deep shock, as this is second time in 30 years we are facing displacement from our home. My father was worried about where we would live,” said his son, Ram Kumar.

The HEC management has served notices to hundreds of people, living on its land illegally, to vacate their houses. The houses will be demolished.

Meanwhile, Indradev Handi, said to be in his 50s, died due to a heart attack in coal city Dhanbad Saturday after being evicted, his family said.

Over 4,200 illegal structures have been demolished in Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Bokaro and other districts in the last one month on the directive of the Jharkhand High Court. The drive has left more than one lakh people homeless.

More than five lakh people will become homeless if the drive continues for the next two to three weeks.
