TVS rides on motorcycle sales, skids with scooter

Chennai, Aug 1 (IANS) TVS Motor Co sold 116,000 units in July, compared to 105,366 units in the corresponding period the previous year, reflecting a 10 percent growth. During the month, motorcycle sales grew 19 percent to 53,000 units in comparison to 44,392 units in July 2007.

TVS, however, saw its scooter sales falling: 23,000 units were sold last month, as against 23,841 units sold the corresponding month last year.

The company crossed a milestone when it rolled out its millionth TVS Scooty Pep from its Mysore plant last month.

The original TVS Scooty, a light 60cc two-stroke scooterette now discontinued, first rolled out in November 1993 and crossed the one-million mark in 2004.

Two wheeler exports continued growing, selling 17,000 units this June, as against 11,395 units exported in the corresponding month last year, posting an increase of 50 percent.
