Tripura bans endosulfan pesticide
June 24th, 2011 - 3:36 pm ICT by IANSAgartala, June 24 (IANS) The Left Front government in Tripura has banned the distribution and use of pesticide endosulfan for three months, officials said Friday.
The pesticide is widely used in agriculture in the country, particularly for rice and cotton crops. According to experts, its use has a debilitating effect on humans, animals and the environment.
“We (Tripura government) have banned the sale, distribution and use of endosulfan for three months,” Tripura agriculture department director Shib Narayan Sen told IANS.
He said: “The Supreme Court May 13 banned the production, distribution and use of endosulfan. Following the court order we have issued a notification banning the pesticide.”
The apex court had passed its orders on a petition by the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M)’s youth wing, the Democratic Youth Federation of India.
