New Delhi, Sep 6 (IANS) About 22 lakh tribal students will benefit from a new centrally sponsored scheme for pre-matric scholarships for scheduled tribe students in Class 9 and 10 approved by the government Thursday.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved the scheme which will go a long way in improving participation of tribal students, enrolled full time for secondary education in government or government-recognised schools or the central/state boards of secondary education, provided their parents’ annual income does not exceed Rs.2 lakh, said officials.

The scheme will help in minimising the incidence of dropout, especially in transition from the elementary to secondary stage of education, said officials.

The implementing agencies will receive 100 percent central assistance.
