Transport strike troubles people in parts of Bengal

Kolkata, July 14 (IANS) Attendance in schools dropped, university examinations were postponed and commuters had a harrowing time here and in three surrounding districts of West Bengal Thursday due to a transport strike called to demand a rise in fares in the wake of the fuel price hike.

The strike, called by a few transport associations, saw taxis, mini buses and buses going off the roads here and in adjoining Howrah, Hooghly and North 24 Parganas districts.

The city streets looked relatively less congested due to the lesser number of vehicles, but the office-goers had to wait for long to board the state-run and few private buses that ventured out.

Buses plying on the streets seemed overcrowded, particularly during the peak morning hours, with people even standing on the footboards.

Calcutta University postponed its B.A, B.Sc part I and II general and part I honours examinations which were slated to be held Thursday.

The Kolkata Metro provided the only relief for commuters.

Around 25,000 taxis and 2,000 mini buses ply on the roads here daily.
