Trai to meet operators on unsolicited commercial calls
August 6th, 2010 - 10:14 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Aug 6 (IANS) The Telecom Regulatory Authority (Trai) will meet service providers in the next few days to resolve the issue of unsolicited commercial calls troubling subscribers, Chairman J.S. Sarma said Friday.
“We will be meeting the (telecom) operators over the course of few days and we are actively working on the solutions,” said Sarma.
Trai has so far made several attempts to curb the menace of unsolicited commercial calls, including creating “Do Not Call Registry” where subscribers who do not wish to receive unsolicited commercial calls can register.
However, there has not been much success. While the voice calls have reduced to some extent, the messages have increased considerably.
In May this year, Trai had released a consultation paper on the review of unsolicited commercial communications regulations and received comments from the stakeholders on the subject.
Sarma said: “Bulk messages is not the only issue, we are looking into several other matters. Our only concern is that the consumers should not be bothered with these unsolicited commercial calls or messages.”
Sharma also added that that so far one of the operators has assured him that it will no longer send bulk messages to the customers.
Sarma also said Trai this month will give its second set of proposals on pricing and allocation of the second generation (2G) spectrum.
“We will be sending a recommendation on the 2G pricing during this month.”
