Toyota plans to open a second plant in Russia
September 22nd, 2010 - 8:03 pm ICT by BNO NewsST. PETERSBURG, RUSSIA (BNO NEWS) – Toyota Motors on Tuesday unveiled that the Japanese vehicle manufacturer plans to open a second plant in Russia, local media reported.
According to RIA Novosti, the President of Toyota Motors Russia Takeshi Isogaya confirmed the company’s intention of expanding its operations in Russian territory as there has been a big increase in the number of foreign car makers in the European giant.
“We intend to strengthen business activity in Russia, partly by building a second plant,” The Toyota Russia President said.
Toyota currently owns and operates its first plant in the Russian city of St. Petersburg. It opened in 2007 and employs around 750 workers. The St. Petersburg facility has a production capacity of 20,000 cars per year.
Since the past decade, Renault, Nissan, Toyota, GM, Ford, Volkswagen, Peugeot, and Citroen have production plants assembling cars in Russia.
