Toyota floor mat 2009 recall still to start
October 9th, 2009 - 2:55 am ICT by Aishwarya BhattNew York, Oct 8 (THAINDIAN NEWS) After a fatal accident that may have been due to a potentially dangerous floor mat that got stuck in the accelerator, which claimed lives is the main reason why Toyota may have issued the floor mat 2009 recall.
However, the recall is yet to start. Melodie Bohuchot the widow of the man who died in that accident has pleaded with Toyota to start the recall soon, to prevent any more accidents.
“I just want Toyota to fix the problem now. Don’t wait,” Bohuchot, 30, told The Associated Press in a telephone interview from Sacramento, Calif. “How many people have to die before they take this seriously?”
Toyota had issued a safety warning for 3.8 million Lexus and Toyota cars because of potentially deadly floor mats.
In statements released on Tuesday, the world’s largest automaker and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration warned drivers to remove the mats or risk a forced-down accelerator pedal that could lead to a fatal crash.
The seven models being recalled could potentially have removable mats that would interfere with the pedal and cause it to stick, and in turn cause an accident.
“A stuck open accelerator pedal may result in very high vehicle speeds and make it difficult to stop the vehicle, which could cause a crash, serious injury or death,” said Toyota in its statement.
