Top officials discuss prices scenarioApril 9th, 2008 - 10:40 pm ICT by admin
New Delhi, April 9 (IANS) A committee of secretaries Wednesday discussed the rising prices of essential commodities and the impact of the steps taken to meet the crisis. “The Committee of Secretaries on Prices discussed rising inflation, especially in essential commodities, the impact of recent rains on standing crops, expected agricultural production in the coming months and availability of food grains,” an official said.
The committee is headed by the cabinet secretary and has secretaries and officials from the ministries of commerce, rural development, urban development, agriculture and civil supplies as members.
India’s annual rate of inflation rose to a three-year high of seven percent in the week ending March 22 amid low buffer stocks and spiralling prices of essential commodities.
Prices of vegetables, grocery products, steel, cement, petroleum and other commodities have skyrocketed in recent weeks. The government has been in the dock over the issue with the opposition parties and even some of its allies and supporters protesting against it.
