timJan 28, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Timothy Geithner, the Treasury Secretary, appeared before a House Oversight and Government Reform Committee in order to testify that he had nothing to do with the bailout of the Tata AIG. Other than Timothy Geithner, the others who had been called on to testify were the erstwhile Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, the former Chief Financial Officer of the Financial Services Division of AIG, Elias Habayeb, director of the Goldman Sachs and Chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, Stephen Friedman, Neil Barofsky, Troubled Asset Relief Program’s Special inspector General and Thomas Baxter, Federal Bank of New York’s general counsel and executive vice president.

At the hearing before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, Timothy Geithner commented that he was not involved in the bailout of the Tata AIG. In the hearing, Representative Stephen Lynch accused Timothy Geithner of not acting on the interests of the people of the United States. Representative John Mic too accused the Treasury Secretary of providing lame excuses. In fact, he also went on to say that the Committee is indeed in a position to ask for the resignation of the Secretary, stating that his actions called for it.

In answer to all those questions and allegations, Timothy Geithner firmly maintained that he had not been involved in the bailout at all, staunchly refusing to agree with the Congressmen on the view that his decision had been a “back-door one”, as pointed out by Representative John Mic. Timothy Geithner kept saying in his testimony that he had done whatever was required of him, and that he had done everything keeping in mind the best interests of the people.
