Tight security in Bengal ahead of Ayodhya verdict
September 29th, 2010 - 3:48 pm ICT by IANSKolkata, Sep 29 (IANS) Security was tightened in sensitive areas of West Bengal Wednesday to prevent any untoward incident in the state ahead of the court verdict on the Ramjanmabhoomi-Babri Masjid land dispute at Ayodhya, officials said.
“Armed police and Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel have been mobilised in Kolkata,” a senior police officer said.
There is high security in markets, shopping malls, schools, at bus stands and railway stations. In many places, monitoring is being carried out through surveillance cameras, the police officer said.
Also, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee Wednesday met state Director General of Police Naparajita Mukherjee, city police commissioner Gautam Mohan Chakravarty and state Chief Secretary Aurobindo Sen to review the security arrangements in the state.
“We have taken every measure to nip the problem in the bud. As per the intelligence inputs we have gathered so far, there is no possibility of any problem,” Joint Commissioner of Police (headquarters) Jawed Shamim said.
A senior state police official said: “The West Bengal government has asked the district magistrates and police superintendents to organise meetings with the local political parties and leaders of the religious groups to maintain peace in the area.”
Home Secretary Samar Ghosh had Tuesday said: “The security arrangement has been extended. Sensitive areas have been identified and special arrangements have been made to prevent any untoward situation.”
