New Delhi, Oct 9 (IANS) With no Commonwealth Games ticket available for the finals of popular sports like tennis, badminton and hockey, the spectators are making a dive for tickets for lesser popular athletics, rugby sevens, squash, netball, and even lawn ball.

According to the Commonwealth Games tickets’ helpline, the spectators are now asking for any available ticket irrespective of the events.

“The sale of tickets of squash, netball, athletics, lawn ball, rugby has increased. We have already sold out tickets of final matches of hockey, badminton, tennis. Tickets of swimming, boxing, wrestling and gymnastics are also in great demand,” said the helpline manager.

There were long queues outside the ticket counters and spectators started arriving to buy tickets since 7 a.m., when the counter opens, although many had to settle with tickets of other events.

“I wanted to watch tennis but tickets for the event are not available. So I have bought a ticket for squash. I am happy that I am watching something in the Commonwealth Games,” said Rishika Gupta, a school student.

“The ticket counters are open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. and being a weekend there was huge rush Saturday,” said a Delhi Police officer who was managing crowds at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

For spectators, it’s all about being part of the mega sporting event.

“You never know when India will host any major sporting event like this … so this is the time and I don’t mind watching any event. All my friends have bought tickets for netball at Thyagraj Stadium and we are gonna have fun,” said Ranjeet Singh, a college student.

Many spectators were buying tickets just to see the venues about which there was so much reporting in media in the days before the Games opened.

“I have heard a lot about the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and was eager to see how it has been renovated. So I have bought a ticket of athletics for Sunday.”
