Text of my statement to CBI not factual: Reliance official

New Delhi, Nov 16 (IANS) Reliance Group executive A.N. Sethuraman Wednesday said the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) did not heed to his demand to change some content of his statement on the 2G case, recorded in March but shown to him only last week.

Deposing before the Special CBI Court hearing the second generation (2G) spectrum case, the senior executive said he was summoned to the CBI office on Nov 9, two days before the trial was to begin, and he knew well that he was a witness.

“I went through my statement at about 4 p.m. on that day and it was the only occasion when I saw my statement. It was the first time that I read the contents of my statement,” Sethuraman said.

“At the time of recording my statement, I was not satisfied with the contents of my statement and I protested to the officer to change the contents thereof, relating to identification of signatures of Hari Nair,” he said.

“I renewed my protest in this regard on Nov 11 also,” he said, referring to Nair, also a Reliance Group official, who is among the 14 people accused in the case, along with the former telecom minister, A. Raja.

Sethuraman said while the CBI had recorded his statement as having said he recognised Nair’s signatures on some documents presented as evidence in the trial court, he wanted that to be instead recorded as “appears to be the signatures of Hari Nair”.

“On both occasions, my objection was not heeded to.”

The documents pertain to Swan Telecom’s entry into the telecom sector in 2007-08, with the CBI alleging that it was a front company of Reliance Group, in contravention of rules and regulations — a charge that has been vehemently denied by the company.
