Telecom equipment production needs to grow: Sibal
May 6th, 2011 - 10:56 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, May 6 (IANS) While the growth of telecommunications in India has been rapid, the domestic telecom equipment manufacturing segment has not been able to keep pace with this, Communications Minister Kapil Sibal said Friday.
“Telecommunication infrastructure is a critical asset of any country and it is a key growth enabler,” said Sibal at a roundtable conference here on manufacturing and research and development in telecom and electronics sector with various stakeholders.
“It is the delivery vehicle for a large number of IT and IT-enabled services including health-care, education, financial services and e-governance,” he added.
According to Sibal, telecom operators are now forced to import equipment required for their networks.
The conference was based on the recommendations given by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India April 12 on telecom equipment manufacturing policy.
The minister also flagged various issue to promote domestic equipment manufacturing including incentives to telecom service providers for using domestic products, fiscal incentives to manufacturers for manufacturing Indian products and creation of fund for encouraging research and development.
