Tatas ready to return Singur land through ‘meaningful talks’
December 17th, 2009 - 12:14 am ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )Kolkata, Dec 16 (IANS) The Tata group was prepared to return the vacant land in Singur through a “meaningful negotiation”, the West Bengal government said Wednesday.
“The Tatas have said they have no objection to returning the land if there is a meaningful negotiation,” state Industries Minister Nirupam Sen told reporters at his chamber in the assembly.
But he did not confirm whether or not the Tatas had asked for compensation for returning the 997.11 acres from which the small car Nano was originally slated to be manufactured. The land is now lying forlorn after the automobile major shifted the plant to Sanand in Gujarat following an intense peasant unrest.
Tatas are still in possession of the land. Group chairman Ratan Tata had said a few months back that the company was willing to return the land if it was compensated for the expenditure it incurred on developing the plot.
