Tata Motors cuts production target, removes 300 temporary workers (Lead)
October 20th, 2008 - 8:12 pm ICT by IANSRanchi, Oct 20 (IANS) Auto major Tata Motors has reduced its production target in the Jamshedpur unit by 15 percent for this month and asked 300 temporary employees in the unit not to report for duty from Monday.Sources in Tata Motors told IANS the company had cut the target of heavy commercial vehicles to 5,950 units from the previous 7,000 units.
Of the 300 temporary employees, 100 belong to the truck division and 200 to the engine division.
Tata Motors said the decision had nothing to do with the current global economic meltdown and added that asking temporary staff to stay away was normal. “It is a routine affair and it has nothing to do with the global economy,” company spokesperson P.J. Singh told IANS.
“This is not first time we have asked temporary employees not to come on work. On rotation temporary employees are given work. Last month, we also regularised services of 250 temporary employees,” he said.
In the last fiscal, Tata Motors produced 125,000 heavy vehicles. “Due to slump in the economy, it (Tata) has produced only around 50,000 heavy vehicles in the first half of the current fiscal,” said Bachhchu Singh, spokesperson of Telco Workers Union, a leading employees’ union in the Jamshedpur unit.
According to him, the target for the current financial year is around 150,000.
