Tamil Nadu to upgrade urban infrastructure
January 16th, 2012 - 5:21 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )Chennai, Jan 16 (IANS) With 67 percent of Tamil Nadu’s population set to live in urban areas by 2030, the state government Monday decided to implement an Integrated Urban Development Scheme at an outlay of Rs.6,653 crore.
In a statement issued here, the government said a sum of Rs.5,890.12 crore has been allocated for improving basic infrastructure like drinking water, sewage disposal, storm water drains, roads, solid waste disposal, bus stands and parking lots of municipal corporations and townships.
A sum of Rs.763.91 crore has been allocated towards infrastructure improvement in town panchayats.
Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa has allocated Rs.757.28 crore for various schemes under the project for the current year for municipal corporations and municipalities.
In order to augment drinking water facilities of Chennai, Jayalalithaa ordered laying of a second pipeline from Chembarambakkam reservoir.
