January 20th, 2012 - 6:25 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )Chennai, Jan 20 (IANS) The Tamil Nadu government will upgrade the Nagapattinam port as an all-weather, deep-water greenfield port at an outlay of Rs.380 crore under the public-private-partnership (PPP) model.
A statement issued by the government here Friday said Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa has ordered the upgradation of the port which would handle around 10 lakh tonnes of cargo in the first year of operation and earn around Rs.20 crore.
Once the upgraded port comes into operation, industrialisation would pick up around the area, resulting in creation of jobs, the government said.
The Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry last month asked for the development of the port.
