Tamil Nadu to distribute another one million TVs
October 7th, 2010 - 10:20 pm ICT by IANSChennai, Oct 7 (IANS) The Tamil Nadu government Thursday decided to buy additional one million colour television sets (CTVs) for free public distribution under an on-going scheme to fulfil the ruling DMK’s poll promise, sources said.
The additional one million 14-inch CTVs will be procured this calendar year and would be distributed by January 2011, they said.
The decision to buy the additional CTVs was taken at a meeting of party legislators chaired by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi at the state secretariat here.
Sources said the decision followed demands made by district collectors to allocate CTVs for people in their areas.
The free CTV scheme was one of the populist promises made by the DMK in its manifesto for the 2006 assembly elections. On coming to power, the DMK government decided to implement the scheme in five phases.
The government procured 15 million CTVs at a cost of around Rs.3,492 crore.
During the current fiscal, the government floated tenders to source four million 14-inch CTVs.
