Tamil Nadu seeks central help to set up windmill projects
June 20th, 2009 - 10:25 pm ICT by IANSChennai, June 20 (IANS) The Tamil Nadu government, planning to set up windmills to generate 1,000 MW, has sought financial assistance from the central government for the project, state Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veeraswami said here Saturday.
“We intend to set up 1,000 MW wind generation capacity at an investment of Rs.1,500 crore. As the state electricity board is not in a position to invest such huge sum, an appeal has been made to union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah for financial assistance,” Veeraswami said.
He added that Abdullah had assured that he would take the issue up with the prime minister and the finance and power ministers.
On a tour to Tamil Nadu, the union minister met Veeraswami and other officials of the Tamil Nadu power ministry Saturday.
The state government intends to install windmills in Theni, Coimbatore, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts.
