Lucknow, Aug 1 (IANS) A new variety of sugarcane that is tolerant to drought and water-logging has been developed by the Indian Institute of Sugarcane Research (IISR) here, a scientist said here Friday. “The new high-yielding sugarcane variety has been named CoLk 94184,” A.K. Sah, scientist, IISR (agriculture extension), told IANS.
Balrampur Sugar Mills in the state has grown the new variety on a trial basis and recorded sugar recovery of 10.23 percent, which is far superior to the average recovery of nine percent, mostly achieved by sugar mills in Uttar Pradesh, he added.
Significantly, the new variety is also resistant to top borer, a sugarcane pest, he said.
