Patna, July 11 (ANI): Students of a women’’s college here formed a human chain on the occasion of World Population Day today to generate awareness about disturbing consequences of ever escalating population.
Students held placards and banners reading ” Plan your family and plan your future”, and ”Over population threat to nation” and distributed pamphlets.
A student said that more numbers increase the work complexity and competition.
“More population will increase the competition amongst the masses thereby increasing the complexity in work. Through this human chain that we have formed today, we want to basically spread the message of ‘’smaller family is happy family”,” said Bhagya Laxmi, a student.
They also expressed their concern over widening gap in sex ratio. They called for inculcating broader and progressive thinking in people to stop female foeticide.
World Population Day, was set by the United Nations Development Programme in 1989.
According to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), contraception can prevent 2.7 million infant deaths a year, reduce poverty, slow population growth and ease the pressure on the environment.
One of the UNFPA’’s targets, for developing nations to meet their needs for contraceptives by 2015, was echoed by the World Bank on Thursday, which said 51 million unplanned pregnancies occur because women lack access to birth control. (ANI)
