Sri Lanka to operate flights to former rebel stronghold
July 21st, 2011 - 10:02 pm ICT by IANSColombo, July 21 (IANS) Sri Lanka is set to launch commercial flights to Kilinochchi, a former stronghold of the vanquished Tamil Tiger rebels in the northern part of the country, Xinhua reported Thursday.
“This service will commence July 28 and it will be a weekly flight on Thursdays,” said air force spokesman Andy Wijesuriya. He said a light aircraft like a Y12 would be deployed for the service.
The announcement came after the air force Tuesday opened its airstrip built at a former rebel training facility.
