As a result of securing the licenses, 45th Space Wing granted Space Florida full rights to proceed with construction and refurbishment work at both launch locations. “The licensing of Launch Complexes 46 and 36 at Cape Canaveral is a critical milestone and part of a broader strategy to establish a Commercial Launch Zone in Florida.” said Governor Crist. “Florida welcomes and is ready to assist space-based businesses locate or expand their business in Florida.”
Space Florida will continue working with the FAA to secure its Launch Site Operators License for each complex. So far, it has conducted corrosion control and maintenance efforts on the Mobile Service Tower at SLC-46, but further refurbishment of SLC-46 is needed to ready it for full commercial launch operations.
Last month, Governor Crist proposed the Space Transition and Revitalization (STAR) Act to ensure Florida’s continued leadership in spaceflight and exploration. The proposed legislation will provide assistance for new and expanding aerospace businesses despite the retirement of the Shuttle Program.
