Rae Bareli, May 19 (IANS) Congress president Sonia Gandhi Wednesday ended a three-day tour of her constituency Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh patiently hearing grievances of people for nearly four long hours.
Gandhi also chaired a meeting to devise ways for reopening a carpet manufacturing unit that would provide jobs to hundreds in Rae Bareli, some 80 km from here, party officials said.

“Soniaji gave a patient hearing to residents of her constituency on several issues related to employment, civic problems, poor implementation of central government schemes and welfare projects,” Uttar Pradesh party spokesman Akhilesh Pratap Singh said in Rae Bareli.

“Soniaji met people one by one and promised action on their complaints as early as possible,” he added.

Gandhi started meeting people at 9 a.m. at the guest house of the Indian Telephone Industries (ITI) in Doorbhash Nagar in Rae Bareli.

“For nearly four hours, she patiently heard the grievances of the people who had started queuing up in front of the guest house since early morning,” said Singh.

“Those who could not meet her were asked to submit their complaints to party officials, who were instructed to take necessary action,” he added.

During her meeting with officials of the carpet manufacturing unit Shina Home Textile, Gandhi promised all possible financial assistance to restart it.

“Due to financial problems, the unit was closed around 10 months ago. Soniaji promised that she would make an all-out effort to reopen the unit that will generate employment opportunities,” said Singh.

According to party officials, the owner of the carpet unit later announced the unit would be reopened.

Gandhi then flew back to New Delhi.
