Kolkata, June 9 (IANS) Silk Air, a subsidiary of the Singapore Airlines, will operate four flights a week from Kolkata to the city-state from Aug 1, a company official said Thursday.
“We look forward to serving both business and leisure travellers alike on the Singapore-Kolkata route from Aug 1. The Silk Air will operate its flights on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday,” said Marvin Tan, the chief executive officer (CEO) of Silk Air.
Singapore Airlines already operates three flights from the city. With Silk Air’s addition, passengers from the city will have a flight daily giving them more choices and convenience.
“Kolkata is the main business, commercial and financial hub of eastern India. It is also a significant destination of historical interest, heritage with rich collection of places of interest.”
Asked if the change of regime in West Bengal influenced their decision, Tan told IANS: “Not exactly, but we are hopeful of a positive attitude from the government. Without positive attitude of the government you cannot function.”
Tan also said the city passengers would also get to taste food of their own choice with special Bengali and Indian cuisines included in the menu.
The flights will leave for Singapore at 9 p.m. while the return flight will arrive in the city at 6.35 a.m.
The officials of both the airlines also met Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Banerjee said: “This is a welcome news for all travellers, be it for business or leisure.”
