Shipping Corporation adds another vessel to its fleet
October 21st, 2010 - 9:58 pm ICT by IANSMumbai, Oct 21 (IANS) The Shipping Corporation of India Ltd (SCI) Thursday took delivery of a Large Range-I (LR-I) product tanker, taking its fleet strength to 76, an official said.
M.T. Swarna Kaveri is the last of SCI’s six LR-Is ordered from South Korea’s STX Shipyard.
“Orders for these vessels were placed in October 2006. While the first two vessels were delivered during July and August 2010, the next two vessels were delivered in September 2010 and fifth vessel was delivered in the first week of October,” said an SCI spokesperson.
The vessel has a gross tonnage of 42,845 tonnes and deadweight of 73,368 tonnes at scantling draft (the maximum draft to which the vessel can be loaded).
Swarna Kaveri has been classed with long-range surveillance (LRS) and has been built to comply with international regulations. “The ship also complies with the requirements of ‘Green Passport’ notation, a safe and environmentally sound approach from building stage to recycling,” the spokesperson said.
“Energy transportation has continued to remain the core business segment for SCI and induction of this vessel in the SCI’s fleet is expected to strengthen its position in the energy transportation area,” he added.
Acquisition of these vessels is in line with SCI’s strategy of maintaining a modern and young fleet of vessels. The company has 27 vessels on order, three of which are slated for delivery this year.
