Shimla goes without water
June 24th, 2011 - 12:10 pm ICT by IANSShimla, June 24 (IANS) This popular tourist town of Himachal Pradesh, once the favourite summer retreat of the British, has been facing an acute water shortage for the past three days.
“Shimla has been short of water since Tuesday due to an inflow of excessive silt in water channels from where water cannot be lifted now. Most of the localities are without water,” Shimla’s Municipal Commissioner A.N. Sharma told IANS Friday.
He said continuous rainfall in the region also damaged water supply pipes and water lifting pumps.
Water was supplied in some localities including Khalini, Vikas Nagar and New Shimla Thursday, the official said, adding: “The water supply in the entire town would be normalised by Saturday.”
The water crisis has left hoteliers unhappy as they expect a heavy rush of tourists this weekend. The town has more than 450 hotels, restaurants and guest houses.
“We have deployed water tankers to get water from the outskirts of Shimla,” said D.P. Bhatia of Clarke’s Hotel, a venture of the Oberoi Group.
Shimla on an average attracts more than 20,000 tourists every weekend during peak tourist season.
