Shimla gets special buses for women
December 7th, 2009 - 11:57 am ICT by IANSShimla, Dec 7 (IANS) “Only for women” special buses have been started in this Himachal Pradesh capital for the convenience of the fairer sex, an official said Monday.
“We have started special buses in Shimla for women. This is for the first time in the state that a bus service reserved only for women has been launched,” Himachal Road Transport Corporation Managing Director Somesh Goel said.
He said initially two buses would ply across the town from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. “If the response to these is good, then more buses would be deployed in the town,” he said.
The state got the buses under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).
Goel said HRTC is also planning to deploy women conductors in these buses.
The Himachal Pradesh High Court has already directed the state government to ensure reservation of seats in buses for women.
