Sensex trading with downward bias

Mumbai, Oct 9 (IANS) A key index of Indian equities markets was flat a little before Friday noon although many mid and small sized company scrips continued to find favour among buyers.
At 10.57 a.m., the sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened higher at 16,915.96 points, was ruling at 16,826.15 points - 17.39 points or 0.1 percent lower than Thursday’s close of 16,843.54 points.
Around the same time, the S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE), too was trading in the red at 4,998.9 points, down 0.07 percent.
Mid-to-small capitalised company scrips were faring better, with their representative indices like the BSE midcap index trading 1.04 percent higher and the BSE smallcap index moving up 0.93 percent.
The market breadth was positive, with 1,288 stocks advancing, 895 declining and 78 remaining unchanged.
Among the gainers at this time on the Sensex were: Bharti Airtel, up 3.15 percent at Rs.345.20; Reliance Communications, up 2.72 percent at Rs.253; DLF, up 2.03 percent at Rs.427, and Tata Steel, up 1.41 percent at Rs.542.65.
Among the losers were Tata Motors, down 4.68 percent at Rs.559.90; SBI, down 1.68 percent at Rs.2,079.40; Hero Honda, down 1.49 percent at Rs.1,644.25, and ITC, down 1.42 percent at Rs.246.85.
Trading at most other Asian markets was upbeat.
The Nikkei, a key index of the Tokyo Stock Exchange, was ruling 151.59 points or 1.54 percent higher at 9,984.06 points.
The primary index of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, Hang Seng, was up 35.79 points or 0.17 percent at 21,528.69 points.
Chinese markets opened after almost a ten day holiday. At the Shanghai Stock Exchange, the benchmark SSE Composite was ruling 3.7 percent up at 2,882.37 points.
The Kospi, benchmark index of the Korean Stock Exchange, too was in the green, moving up 30.28 points or 1.87 percent to rule at 1,645.74 points.
