Sensex rises in noon trade (Lead)

Sensex Mumbai, April 4 (IANS) A benchmark index for Indian equities markets Monday rose in noon trade along with broader indices with frontline stocks such as Hero Honda and HDFC banks gaining.

The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 19,473.93 points, was ruling at 19,609.2 points, up 188.81 points or 0.97 percent from its previous close at 19,420.39 points.

The 50-scrip S&P; CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange was trading 0.9 percent higher at 5,878.6 points.

Broader markets were doing better with the BSE midcap index up 1.54 percent and the BSE small cap index trading 2.4 percent higher.

IT, banking, telecom and consumer durables stocks were among major gainers. All 13 sectoral indices on the BSE were in the green.

Among major gainers on the Sensex, at this time of the day, were Jaiprakash Associates, M&M;, Hero Honda and HDFC Bank, while the losers included Reliance Communications, Hindustan Unilever, Cipla and Reliance Infra.

The market breadth was positive with 2,145 stocks advancing, 449 on the decline and 77 remaining unchanged.

Trading in other Asian markets was mixed.

The Japanese Nikkei average closed 0.11 percent higher at 9,718.89 points.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng rose 1.16 percent to trade at 24,077 points. Chinese markets were closed on account of a holiday.
