Sensex rises 74 points, IT, auto stocks up

Sensex Mumbai, Sep 12 (IANS) A benchmark index of Indian equities markets was trading 74 points higher in afternoon trade Wednesday with robust buying in IT and auto stocks.

The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) opened at 17,916.13 points and was ruling at 17,926.95 points, 74 points or 0.41 percent up from its previous day’s close at 17,852.95 points.

The Sensex touched a high of 17,959.08 and a low of 17,891.02 points in intra-day trade. The BSE midcap index was up 13.74 points while the smallcap index was 19.10 points high.

The wider 50-scrip S&P; CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange was ruling 0.31 percent up at 5,406.80 points.

On the sectoral front, the BSE IT index was up 51.89 points while auto index was up 69.71 points.

Top Sensex gainers were Tata Motors, up 3.04 percent at Rs.257.20; Coal India, up 2.24 percent at Rs.373.80; Dr Reddys Lab, up 1.77 percent at Rs.1,756.05; TCS, up 1.67 percent at Rs.1,414.80; and Larsen and Toubro, up 1.39 percent at Rs.1,388.65.

The main losers included BHEL, down 2.34 percent at Rs.196.25; Jindal Steel, down 2.23 percent at Rs.326.35; Cipla, down 1.73 percent at Rs.382.70; Hindalco Inds, down 1.60 percent at Rs.107.30; and Hero MotoCorp down 1.13 percent at Rs.1,782.

Among other Asian markets, Japan’s Nikkei was up 1.73 percent and so was Hong Kong’s Hang Seng, up 0.97 percent. Shanghai’s composite index was trading 0.28 percent higher.

The European markets opened mixed. France’s CAC was down 0.13 percent, while Germany’s DAX was up 0.16 percent. Britain’s FTSE 100 was trading 0.23 percent lower.
