Sensex rises 31 points; oil and gas, PSU stocks up

Sensex Mumbai, Sep 13 (IANS) A benchmark index of Indian equities markets was trading 31 points higher Thursday afternoon with robust buying in oil and gas, PSU and capital goods stocks.

The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 18,023.95 points, was ruling at 18,030.94 points, 30.91 points or 0.17 percent up from its previous day’s close at 18,000.03 points.

The Sensex touched a high of 18,062.68 and a low of 17,993.97 points in intra-day trade. The BSE midcap index was up 5.90 points while the smallcap index was 9.90 points high.

The wider 50-scrip S&P; CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange was also ruling 0.06 percent up at 5,434.20 points.

On the sectoral front, the BSE oil and gas index was up 75.83 points while PSU index was up 56.43 points and capital goods index was up 56.34 points.

Top Sensex gainers were Hero MotoCorp, up 2.20 percent at Rs.1,825; ONGC, up 1.70 percent at Rs.284.55; Bajaj Auto, up 1.33 percent at Rs.1,714.50; BHEL, up 1.29 percent at Rs.200.20; and Gail India, up 1.10 percent at Rs.370.75.

The main losers included Bharti Airtel, down 2.51 percent at Rs.254.55; Cipla, down 1.99 percent at Rs.371.25; Tata Motors, down 1.46 percent at Rs.258.95; Sterlite Inds, down 1.15 percent at Rs.94.15; and Jindal Steel down 1.11 percent at Rs.342.60.

Among other Asian markets, Japan’s Nikkei was up 0.39 percent while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng was down 0.09 percent. Shanghai’s composite index was trading 0.76 percent lower.

The European markets opened in red. France’s CAC was down 0.31 percent, while Germany’s DAX was down 0.07 percent. Britain’s FTSE 100 was trading 0.03 percent lower.
