Sensex pares Monday gains, Asian cues weak (Lead)

Sensex Mumbai, Nov 23 (IANS) A benchmark index of Indian equities market Tuesday wiped out its previous day’s gains, joining other gloomy Asian markets.

The 30-share sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 19,841.42 points, was ruling at 19,594.48 points, down 363.11 points or 1.82 percent from its previous close of 19,957.59 points.

At the National Stock Exchange (NSE), the 50-share S&P CNX Nifty was trading at 5,945.15 points, down 1.08 percent.

Broader markets indices were stronger, with the BSE madcap index ruling 1.38 percent higher while the BSE smallcap index moved up 1.42 percent.

All of the sectoral indices were in the negative. Realty, metal and auto stocks were among the major losers, while some IT stocks were trading weak as well.

The only gainer on the Sensex was Hindustan Unilever. Among losers were Hindalco Industries, SBI, Sterlite Industries and Tata Power.

Other Asian markets too were trading lower.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng was trading 2.46 percent lower at 22,944.75 points, while the Shanghai Composite index was ruling 1.83 percent down at 2,831.73 points.

The Japanese markets were closed.
