Sensex ends tamely, broader markets close dull (Roundup)

Mumbai, April 25 (IANS) A benchmark index for Indian equities markets closed flat Monday on a largely lacklustre trading day. Heavyweight Reliance Industries was a major dampner as the markets reacted negatively to the below expected results of the blue-chip firm.
The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 19,538.52 points, closed at 19,584.31 points, down 17.92 points or 0.09 percent from its previous close at 19,602.23 points.
The 50-scrip S&P; CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange closed 0.17 percent lower at 5,874.5 points.
RIL had Thursday reported a 14.1 percent rise in net profit at Rs.5,376 crore for the quarter ended March 31, lower than what analysts expected.
Broader markets too ended dull, with the BSE midcap index closing 0.09 percent up and the BSE small cap index ending 0.24 percent higher.
Consumer durables, IT and telecom scrips were among the major gainers, while energy and realty scrips ended on the losing side.
Among major gainers on the Sensex were Sterlite, up 4.4 percent at Rs.186.40; SBI, up 2.06 percent at Rs.2,919.35; Maruti Suzuki, up 1.53 percent at Rs.1,326.55 and Infosy, up 1.13 percent at Rs.2,942.15.
The losers included: RIL, down 2.97 percent at Rs.1,009.10; DLF, down 2.25 percent at Rs.241.50; Reliance Communications, down 1.41 percent at Rs.104.80 and Jaiprakash Associates, down 0.98 percent at Rs.100.70.
The market breadth was negative with 1,340 stocks advancing, 1,558 on the decline and 103 remaining unchanged.
According to data available with market regulator SEBI, foreign institutional investors were net buyers, lapping up stocks worth $140.51 million.
Other Asian markets closed in a slump as traders were cautious ahead of release of key corporate earnings reports.
The Japanese Nikkei average closed flat at 9,671.96 points, while the Shanghai composite index of the Chinese stock exchanges shed 1.51 percent at 2,964.95 points.
The Hong Kong stock exchange was closed on account of a holiday.
European stock markets were also shut Monday on account of the Easter Monday holiday.
