Sensex dull in afternoon trade (Lead)

Sensex Mumbai, April 6 (IANS) A benchmark index for Indian equities markets was ruling on a flat note even as broader markets continued to gain.

The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 19,698.61 points, was ruling at 19,650.15 points — down 36.67 points or 0.19 percent from its previous close at 19,686.82 points.

The Sensex touched an intra-day high of 19,811.14 points and slipped to a low of 19,550.55 points.

The 50-scrip S&P; CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange was trading 0.17 percent lower at 5,899.95 points.

Broader markets were doing better, with the BSE midcap index up 0.71 percent and the BSE small cap index trading 0.92 percent higher.

Realty and consumer durables and power stocks were among major gainers. Among the losing sectors were telecom, FMCG and banking.

Among major gainers on the Sensex were Tata Motors, Reliance Infra, Hero Honda and NTPC while the losers included Wipro, Hindalco, Bharti Airtel and M&M.;

The market breadth was positive with 1,733 stocks advancing, 1,092 on the decline and 96 remaining unchanged.

Other Asian markets ended on a mixed bag.

The Japanese Nikkei average closed 0.32 percent lower at 9,584.37 points.

After an extended weekend, Chinese stock exchanges rose, with its benchmark the Shangahi composite index closing 1.14 percent higher at 3,001.36 points.

The Hang Seng of the Hong Kong stock exchange too ended in the green, at 24,285.05 points, up 0.56 percent.
