Sensex dips on profit taking (Lead)

Sensex Mumbai, April 5 (IANS) A benchmark index for Indian equities markets Tuesday slipped into negative terrain as some profit taking was seen after the previous day’s rally. Broader markets too shed early gains.

The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 19,731.38 points, was ruling at 19,576.26 points around noon, down 125.47 points or 0.64 percent from its previous close at 19,701.73 points.

The 50-scrip S&P; CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange was trading 0.6 percent lower at 5,873.05 points.

Broader markets also pared early gains, with the BSE midcap index only 0.1 percent up and the BSE small cap index trading 0.57 percent higher

Consumer durables, healthcare and FMCG stocks were among major gainers at this time. Among losing sectors were banking, realty and auto.

Among major gainers on the Sensex, at this time of the day, were Cipla, Reliance Communications, BHEL and Hero Honda while the losers included M&M;, DLF, Tata Power and Jindal Steel.

The market breadth was positive with 1,478 stocks advancing, 1,104 on the decline and 73 remaining unchanged.

It was a holiday for some major markets in Asia.

The Japanese Nikkei average closed 1.01 percent lower at 9,620.96 points.

Hong Kong and Chinese stock exchanges were closed on account of a holiday.
