Sensex closes near day’s low, down 217 points (Second Lead)

Mumbai, Dec 15 (IANS) A benchmark index of the Indian equities markets Tuesday closed near its intra-day low, ending 217 points lower than Monday’s close even as other Asian markets shut shop on a damp note.
The sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) — which opened at 17,150.59 points — ended at 17,051.02 points (provisional), down 217 points or 1.26 percent from its previous close at 17,097.55 points.
It had risen more than 102 points during early trade.
At the National Stock Exchange (NSE), the broader 50-share S&P CNX Nifty ended at 5,021.4 points, against the previous close at 5,105.7 points, a loss of 1.65 percent or 84.3 points.
Broader market indices also came under selling pressure, with the BSE midcap index down 1.75 percent and the BSE small cap index ruling a 1.58 percent lower.
