Sensex closes 247 points lower (Second Lead)

Mumbai, Aug 4 (IANS) A benchmark index for Indian equities markets continued with its downtrend closing Thursday at a loss of 247 points.
The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 17,983.86 points, closed at 17,693.18 points, down 247.37 points or 1.38 percent from its previous close at 17,940.55 points.
The 50-scrip S&P; CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange also closed lower at 5,331 points, down 1.37 percent.
Broader markets too were in the red. The BSE midcap index closed 0.76 percent down and the BSE smallcap index ended 0.57 percent lower.
