Sensex closes 0.5 percent lower (Second Lead)

Mumbai, Jan 19 (IANS) A benchmark index for an Indian equities market Wednesday edged lower, closing 0.5 percent down in a largely lacklustre trading day. The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 19,153.31 points, closed at 18,997.32 points (provisional) - down 94.73 points or 0.5 percent from its previous close at 19,092.05 points.
The 50-scrip S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange too shut shop lower at 5,699.15 points, 24.9 points or 0.44 percent lower.
Broader markets, moved up moderately, with the BSE midcap index closing 0.27 percent up and the BSE smallcap index ending 0.17 percent higher.
