Sensex 52 points up; IT, power stocks high (Lead)

Sensex Mumbai, Sep 11 (IANS) A benchmark index of Indian equities markets was trading 52 points higher in late afternoon trade Tuesday as IT, power and realty stocks went up.

The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 17,711.80 points, was ruling at 17,819.29 points, 52.51 points or 0.30 percent up from its previous day’s close at 17,766.78 points.

The Sensex touched a high of 17,847.53 and a low of 17,677.38 points in intra-day trade. The BSE midcap index was up 13.23 points, while the smallcap index was 33.18 points high.

The wider 50-scrip S&P; CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange was ruling 0.37 percent up at 5,383.30 points.

On the sectoral front, the BSE IT index was up 42.27 points, power index, was up by 11.63 points, and the realty index, up 9.14 points.

Top Sensex gainers were HDFC, up 2.48 percent at Rs.758; Gail India, up 1.87 percent at Rs.373.65; NTPC, up 1.31 percent at Rs.173.85; TCS, up 1.29 percent at Rs.1,390; and BHEL, up 1.06 percent at Rs.200.25.

The main losers included Sterlite Inds, down 4.63 percent at Rs.93.75; Jindal Steel, down 3.66 percent at Rs.332; Hero MotoCorp, down 1.43 percent at Rs.1794.55; Tata Steel, down 0.80 percent at Rs.376.85; and Hindustan Unilever down 0.69 percent at Rs.531.55.

Among other Asian markets, Japan’s Nikkei was down 0.70 percent, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng was up 0.15 percent. Shanghai’s composite index was trading 0.67 percent lower.

The European markets opened lower. France’s CAC was down 0.31 percent, while Germany’s DAX and Britain’s FTSE 100 were respectively trading 0.15 percent and 0.42 percent lower.
