Security sought to run trains in Assam (Lead)

New Delhi, July 24 (IANS) The central and Assam governments were Tuesday urged to provide security so that trains halted due to communal clashes in the state could run again.
Railway Minister Mukul Roy made the request to Home Minister P. Chidambaram and Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, an official statement said.
He said the train services had been crippled in a 54-km stretch between Srirampur and Salakati railway stations, leaving a large number of railway passengers stranded.
According to the ministry, 26 trains have been cancelled. In addition, 37 have been halted at various stations.
