Searing heat takes Delhi power demand to new high
June 27th, 2009 - 10:09 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, June 27 (IANS) As people in Delhi continued battling the searing heat, the demand for electricity Saturday reached 4,218 MW - a new high in the capital that also witnessed protests over continued power cuts.
With the maximum temperature hovering over 43.7 degrees Celsius - five degrees over the average, the ever increasing use of ACs, coolers and other cooling aids has gone further up.
“The demand of 4,218 MW is the highest ever in the national capital. At one point, the demand rose to 4,275 MW. The maximum load shedding was to the tune of 566 MW,” a Delhi Transco Limited official told IANS.
“The average power demand of the national capital hovers around 3,600-3,700 MW. The demand has also increased because of the high temperature and humidity,” the official said.
The city’s power demand Friday was 4,206 MW, though it received only 4,171 MW - from its own production and its quota in the central grid.
Angry residents took to the streets protesting against long power cuts - ranging from a couple of hours to 10 hours a day in various localities.
People blocked traffic, vandalised offices of power distribution companies and demonstrated outside the residence of state Power Minister A.K. Walia in east Delhi.
