Scheme to benefit village postal workers after retirement launched
May 3rd, 2011 - 9:09 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, May 3 (IANS) Minister of State for Communication and Information Technology Sachin Pilot Tuesday launched a service discharge benefit scheme to facilitate Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDSs), who work mainly in rural and far-flung areas across the country, post-retirement.
Under the scheme, the government will deposit Rs.200 per such worker for over 2.7 lakh of them, involving an annual expenditure of about Rs.70 crore to provide financial security to the workers and their spouses after retirement.
“The GDSs are the backbone of the postal department and are responsible for running the rural network of post offices. The department has been committed to the welfare of such an important constituent of postal human resources,” said Pilot.
“The service discharge benefit scheme launched today will go a long way in providing financial and social security to the GDSs after retirement,” he added.
Pilot launched the scheme by giving away the permanent retirement account number cards to selected GDSs.
Enrollment under the scheme will be done by central record keeping agency, National Securities Depository Limited.
