Chennai, Feb 16 (IANS) The sit-in strike by workers of Sanmina SCI India demanding wage hike and health insurance among other things entered the second day with women workers joining the protest Wednesday morning.Situated at the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Oragadam, around 50 km from here, Sanmina SCI India is a subsidiary of US based $6.3 billion turnover Sanmina SCI Corporation, a global electronic manufacturing services company.

“The strike is continuing with women workers joining the protest. Last night, we had sent them home,” P. Balaji, treasurer of Sanmina SCI CITU Union, told IANS.

He said the strike was warranted as their wages were not revised for the past three years even as inflation is galloping fast.

“The company held talks with the workers for the past six months and finally refused to entertain any of our demands. Last September, we struck work and we were told the issues could be sorted out,” he said.

According to Balaji, the company has around 1,200 workers of which around 850 are permanent and the rest are casual labourers.

Sanmina SCI caters to several leading electronic equipment manufacturers with an array of services, including design and engineering. It has clients in various sectors ranging from telecommunication, defence and aerospace to medical, renewable energy and multimedia.

Company officials were not available for comments.
