New Delhi, June 3 (IANS) Sajjan Jindal, vice chairman and managing director of Jindal Steel Works (JSW) group, Tuesday took over as the new president of the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham). Assocham is the country’s premier industry body with a membership of over 200,000 companies and professionals.

Jindal succeeds Venugopal N. Dhoot, chairman and managing director of Videocon group, following the conclusion of the chamber’s 87th annual general meeting here.

The new president, who steers the $3.7 billion JSW group, has been closely associated with Assocham for many years and was earlier the senior vice president of the industry body.

In a statement issued here, Jindal said: “Making Latin America as Indian Inc’s major business partner, suggesting measures to the government to tame inflation and promoting agricultural growth to go up to 5 percent are on top of my agenda”.

The other two areas in which Jindal said he will work are increased commitment of Indian industry towards corporate social responsibility and enhancing manufacturing growth, which currently suffers a slowdown.
