Moscow, March 24 (IANS/RIA Novosti) The narcotics market in Russia is valued at over $8 billion because of an influx of import from Afghanistan’s booming drug production industry, a top official said.

The heroin market is valued at $6 billion, while Afghan imports also boosted Russia’s hashish market to $1.5 billion, said Viktor Ivanov, head of the Federal Drug Control Service.

A further $1 billion was spent in 2011 on synthetic narcotics, he said.

The market for acetylated opium was valued at $200 million, cocaine at $80 million and desomorphine at $100 million.

Ivanov said he has asked the government to criminalise illegal drug use, making it punishable with a jail term or mandatory treatment.
