Kolkata, Sep 17 (IANS) Kolkata-based Roofers Group Monday said it would start commercial production at its newly-built cement plant in West Bengal’s West Midnapore district within a couple of days and increase production three-fold within one-and-a-half years.

This is a major development for West Midnapore district, considered a stronghold of the Maoists, where work on Bengal’s largest proposed industrial project, the Rs.35,000-crore steel and power project of Sajjan Jindal’s JSW Group at Shalboni, was stuck for more than four years due to differences between the government and Jindals as well as forest clearances.

The Rs.250 crore Roofers group set up the 200-metric tonne (mt) cement plant on 30 acres of land at Lodhasuli. It will be inaugurated Tuesday.

“We have initially invested Rs.30 crore to set up a 200 mt plant at Lodhasuli. Commercial production from the plant will commence a day after its inauguration,” Roofers Group president Anjan Bandyopadhyay said here.

“We will scale up production to 600 mt within one and half years from now. It would require an additional investment of about Rs.100 crore,” Bandyopadhyay said.

He said the investment would to be sourced mostly through internal accruals.

The group is also looking to invest about Rs.200 crore this year in various ongoing construction activities, both for the government projects and residential projects, in the South 24 Parganas district.

The group, which is eyeing to clock a turnover of Rs.400 crore by the end of this year, is planning to build seven properties at locations in Bengal, Odisha and the Andaman Islands.
